Cacao Barometer 2020 How can we make chocolate truly sustainable? Start Most of the world’s chocolate is consumed in the North. All of the world’s cocoa is produced in the South. Only a few companies and governments make the calls. How can they make chocolate truly sustainable? What we see is a growth of cocoa production worldwide. Especially in Africa. Farmers are poor because of a combination of small farm size, low productivity, high costs, no diversified income, and low prices. This leaves most of the farmers well below a living income. And history tells us that prices have been going down for decades. Farmer poverty has a cost: child labour and deforestation are widespread. We need a system change. And we need to look at the necessary enabling environment. We need laws to ensure all the companies play fair. Farmers need to be involved in designing the solutions. We need to look at the whole landscape, not just individual farms. And for all this to happen, we need a lot more transparency and accountability. With the right enabling environment, we can achieve a living income for farmers and protect human rights and the environment. Want to know more? Download the full 2020 Cocoa Barometer.
